The ache that had gnawed within me, ancient as the roots of forgotten mountains and relentless as the tide beneath a moonless sky, departed at last. It vanished not with triumph nor surrender, but as a mist withdraws from a haunted valley when no wind is seen to stir it.

My desire, once a crimson tyrant enthroned within the chambers of my heart, had been bound beneath invisible chains whose maker I could neither name nor curse. Thus, emptied of longing, I yielded to sleep.

It came upon me not as the gentle blessing known to weary travelers, but as a sable monarch descending from the constellations. Vast wings of oblivion enfolded my senses, and the world of stone, forest, and familiar sky dissolved into immeasurable darkness.

The day passed into night, and night into day once more, though I perceived neither dawn nor twilight. Time itself became a forgotten relic abandoned upon the shore of eternity. Somewhere beyond my dreaming, unseen suns performed their ordained revolutions, while silent moons traced silver circles above lands I no longer remembered.

Yet my sleep was not without strange companions.

Shapes gathered at the edge of consciousness, robed in garments woven from the dust of extinguished stars. Their faces possessed neither eyes nor mouths, yet I felt their scrutiny more keenly than any mortal gaze. They spoke without voices, and each unuttered syllable settled upon my soul like frost upon abandoned temples.

They offered neither prophecy nor warning.

Instead, they revealed immeasurable distances where forgotten cities floated amid violet abysses, upheld by columns carved from frozen lightning. Rivers of liquid sapphire flowed upward into skies crowded with impossible constellations, and gardens blossomed with flowers whose petals were fashioned from translucent crystal and living flame.

I wandered among those impossible realms as though they had awaited my arrival since the birth of the first cosmos. Their beauty inspired neither joy nor fear, but a melancholy so profound that even memory seemed too frail to preserve it. At length, the silent figures departed.

One by one, they faded into the luminous haze from which they had emerged, until only a single shadow remained. It approached with measured certainty and laid a hand, cold as primordial marble, upon my brow. Then the dream shattered.

I awakened beneath the familiar heavens, where pale morning light filtered through branches trembling in an earthly breeze. Birds sang with innocent voices, and dew jeweled the waiting grass. Nothing had changed, save for me.

The ache had not returned. Neither had desire.

In their absence remained an emptiness deeper than sorrow and more enduring than contentment, as though some celestial creditor had accepted payment for a debt I had never known existed. I rose in silence, carrying within me the tranquil burden of one who has glimpsed the infinite and found that eternity itself can leave a man strangely, irrevocably hollow.
