A Small Fortune in Powder and a Borrowed Name

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, thinking that certain substances ought not to be shared so freely, conducted a targeted investigation and arrived, by the usual combination of patience and paperwork, at one Jess Zimmerli, 42. He was taken into custody during a Reno traffic stop on April 23, which is a fine place to end a journey that ought not have started.

The arrest was a cooperative effort among units with names long enough to suggest determination: the Northern Nevada Drug Task Force, aided by HIDTA members, a K9 unit, and the Regional Narcotics Unit, each contributing a piece of the law until the whole of it stood in the roadway.

From this enterprise came the recovery of approximately 22.54 grams of fentanyl and 7.5 grams of methamphetamine, quantities small in weight yet large in consequence. Mr. Zimmerli is looking at multiple felony charges, including possession with intent to sell, and a particular fondness for fentanyl in the 14–28 gram range, which the statutes regard with special disapproval.

He’s alleged to have employed another man’s identity, which may save time in conversation but seldom survives inspection, along with tending to a pair of outstanding warrants for failing to appear and showing contempt for the court, two habits that, like most, improve with attention.

Mr. Zimmerli now resides, for the moment, at the county’s expense, where his name, whichever one he prefers, will be kept on file with admirable accuracy.
