Gardnerville Man Arrested After Threatening Neighbors

A 54-year-old Gardnerville man was arrested Monday afternoon after deputies say he threatened neighbors with a shotgun and later barricaded himself inside his home.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the Meadowlark Circle area around 2:30 p.m. on April 6 after receiving reports of a man making threats. Authorities say the suspect, identified as Thomas Detwiler, entered a neighbor’s property while armed with a shotgun and threatened those nearby.

When deputies arrived, Detwiler returned to his residence and refused to comply with commands, barricading himself inside the home, officials said.

Deputies made repeated attempts to contact Detwiler without success. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and Crisis Negotiation Team were called to the scene and continued efforts to establish communication.

Authorities said a search warrant was obtained for Detwiler and the weapon. SWAT members later located him hiding in a crawl space beneath the home.

Detwiler was taken into custody without further incident and booked into the Douglas County Jail. He faces charges including possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, and resisting arrest.
