A 10-year-old boy has confessed to starting a fire that destroyed a children’s playground at an apartment complex in Carson City on Sunday, according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.
The fire, first reported around 1 p.m. at 20 College Parkway, destroyed the playground but was contained by firefighters, who prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings.
Deputies and detectives determined that five juveniles had been playing in the area immediately before the fire ignited on or near the playground’s rubber-like ground surface. Investigators relied on witness accounts and surveillance footage to identify the children present.
Furlong confirmed the confession but did not release further details about potential consequences for the juvenile.
