Gunman Targets Carson City Cameras

Early Saturday morning, gunfire aimed at city-owned camera systems in south Carson City ignited multiple fires and triggered a dramatic high-speed pursuit, authorities said.

At approximately 1:10 a.m. on April 4, Carson City Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of gunshots at multiple locations in South Carson City, along with fires linked to the attacks. Investigators later identified 46-year-old Kerry Benson as the suspect.

According to authorities, Benson was captured on city camera systems firing at cameras at intersections, including Fairview Drive and South Edmonds, Fairview Drive and South Roop Street, and Fairview Drive and Koontz Lane. Two of the incidents caused the cameras’ lithium batteries to ignite.

Deputies later located Benson in his vehicle on Sonoma Street near Carson Street. Benson fled at high speed, leading deputies on a chase through South Carson City before heading east along Carson River Road at Pinion Hills Drive, where his vehicle overturned and caught fire.

Benson was taken into custody and transported via Care Flight to Renown Medical Center with moderate injuries, including leg and head trauma. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting incidents, while the Nevada State Police handles the crash investigation.
