Nevada State Police Warn of Scam Texts

The Nevada Threat Analysis Center (NTAC) is warning residents about a scam involving fraudulent text messages purporting to come from the “State of Nevada, Department of Safety & Homeland Security.”

The messages, reported Thursday, March 26, use alarming language such as “FINAL COURT-ORDERED MANDATORY COLLECTION NOTICE” and falsely claim the recipient’s traffic violation account is delinquent or in default. Authorities say the texts pressure recipients into scanning a QR code, which could lead to requests for personal or financial information, payment of fake fees, or the installation of malware.

Nevada State Police does not send texts demanding payment, threatening legal action, or directing people to resolve violations via QR codes.
