Nevada lawmakers met on Wednesday to discuss the rapid growth of data centers across the state and the potential environmental and economic impacts of their expansion.
The Joint Interim Standing Committee on Growth and Infrastructure and Natural Resources heard from residents and advocacy groups, including the Sierra Club Toiyabe Chapter, who raised concerns about energy consumption, water usage, and environmental effects. Large data centers can use up to 5 million gallons of water daily, primarily for cooling servers, according to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute.
The committee also heard from NV Energy and Google, which operates data centers in Storey and Clark counties. Nevada currently has more than 60 data centers, many at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center.
