Elko County commissioners have formally approved a resolution opposing the introduction of gray wolves into Nevada and urged the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) to adopt a statewide policy against allowing wolves. The move reflects concerns from local ranchers and wildlife managers about potential impacts on livestock and big game populations.
The resolution directs county staff to transmit the measure to NDOW for consideration in future policy development. Commissioners cited risks to livestock operations, potential effects on mule deer and elk herds, and alignment with Elko County’s existing predator management priorities in the high desert rangelands.
The action comes during broader regional discussions on wolf presence, including possible sightings in northeast Nevada and ongoing debates in neighboring states such as California.
