BLM to Begin Wild Burro Gather Near Beatty

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will begin a wild burro gather near Beatty next month as part of ongoing herd management efforts.

Starting April 1, the agency plans to round up approximately 500 excess wild burros in and around the Bullfrog Herd Management Area, which covers more than 157,000 acres of public and private lands in Nye County.

The Bullfrog Herd Management Area can support between 58 and 91 wild burros. But the BLM estimates that roughly 1,096 burros currently roam the region.

An emergency gather last October removed 246 animals.

BLM officials say the purpose of the gather is to prevent “undue or unnecessary degradation” of public lands while maintaining a sustainable population of wild burros in the area.
