Anniversary of Disappearance Remembered in Lyon County

Last Thursday, March 12, marked the fourth anniversary of the disappearance of 18-year-old Naomi Irion, whose abduction and death shocked Northern Nevada in 2022.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged the anniversary in a Facebook post, remembering Irion and offering support to her family and friends.

Irion was seen early on the morning of March 12, 2022, while waiting in her car for a shuttle that would take her to work at the Panasonic battery plant at the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center. Investigators say a man later identified as Troy Driver approached her vehicle, got inside, and drove away.

Irion’s disappearance prompted a large search effort across the region.

Her body was discovered on March 29, 2022, in a remote area of Lyon County. Authorities confirmed her identity the following day.

Driver was arrested and charged with Irion’s kidnapping and murder. He pleaded not guilty, and his legal team sought to have the charges dismissed, arguing there were jurisdictional issues in the case.

While awaiting trial in August 2022, Driver reportedly wrote a suicide note and confession and hid them inside a deck of playing cards. The cards were passed to an inmate who had been released from custody and delivered to Driver’s ex-girlfriend, who turned them over to law enforcement.

The writings also indicated Driver intended to take his own life rather than bring further pain to his family over the allegations against him. Following the discovery of the note, authorities placed Driver on suicide watch and conducted a mental health evaluation.

After the evaluation, he was removed from suicide watch and returned to his cell. Driver attempted suicide later that same month and again in March 2023.

On August 6, 2023, he died by suicide while in custody.

In the aftermath of Irion’s death, her family remembered her as a compassionate and caring young woman. Her brother, Casey Valley, described her as deeply empathetic.
