UNR Eyes Veterinary Medical School

The University of Nevada, Reno is exploring the possibility of establishing the state’s first in-state veterinary medical school, officials said, a move aimed at addressing shortages in rural, agricultural, and food-animal veterinary services.

On Thursday, UNR Executive Vice President and Provost Jeff Thompson will deliver a presentation to the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents outlining plans for a potential veterinary college.

Currently, Nevada has no in-state doctor of veterinary medicine programs, with the nearest accredited schools located at UC-Davis in California and Oregon State University. Across the United States, there are 32 accredited veterinary schools.

Officials estimate that tuition would be $26,000.

Thursday’s presentation is informational only, but if the NSHE board approves the proposal, it will take several years before the school opens.
