A late-morning house fire in Fernley on Wednesday turned deadly and briefly threatened nearby homes as firefighters battled flames in windy conditions.
The North Lyon Fire Protection District responded at about 11:35 a.m. March 4, to a structure fire at a home on Canal Drive. When crews arrived, they found a residential structure involved in flames.
Assisted by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Central Lyon Fire Protection District, Storey County Fire Department, and Pyramid Lake Fire Department, crews were able to quickly knock down the main body of the fire and prevent it from spreading further. However, flames did extend to a neighboring residence, causing minor damage to a garage.
During the response, firefighters discovered one person dead inside the home where the fire started. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity.
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Nevada State Fire Marshal’s Office.
