Fernley Man Sentenced to 15 Years to Life

A Fernley man has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping and child abuse charges stemming from the assault of three children earlier this year.

Guillermo Aboytes-Saavedra was sentenced Monday in the Third Judicial District Court, according to a release from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. He received three consecutive terms of five years to life in prison, meaning he must serve a minimum of 15 years before he is eligible for parole consideration.

The charges stem from a May 7 incident in which Lyon County deputies say Aboytes-Saavedra approached three children at a neighborhood park around 6 p.m. and immediately became aggressive. Sheriff Brad Pope previously said the suspect slapped one child and claimed to be a cartel member while threatening the children.

Investigators said Aboytes-Saavedra forced the children to walk with him to a nearby residence in Fernley, instructing them to act normally and avoid drawing attention. Once at home, he allegedly made them jump a fence into the backyard.

According to authorities, Aboytes-Saavedra beat the children with a broken rake handle and a hand scythe before forcing them into a crawl space beneath the residence. Sheriff Pope said the suspect locked the children inside and removed them one at a time to continue the assaults. At one point, he allegedly used one of the child’s phones to record the abuse.

One of the children was able to call 9-1-1 while inside the crawl space. Deputies tracked the phone’s location, arrested Aboytes-Saavedra, and rescued the children.

At the time of the arrest, authorities said it was unclear whether the suspect was intoxicated or experiencing mental health issues. Investigators also said they found no known connection between Aboytes-Saavedra and the victims.
