Trump Announces Executive Order to Require Voter ID

President Donald Trump announced plans to issue an executive order requiring voters to show identification at polling sites, just months ahead of the November midterm elections.

While Nevada requires a valid ID to register to vote, voters do not need to show identification when casting a ballot. Trump said he intends to implement the executive order with or without Congressional approval.

Sen. Catherine Cortez-Masto noted that legislators previously passed the Save Act through the House, which would require voter IDs and proof of citizenship for elections nationwide. She expressed concern about the executive order, saying voters should make the decision and that widespread voter fraud is not occurring.

In 2024, Nevada voters approved a ballot measure to amend the state constitution requiring voter IDs for elections. However, unlike the Save Act, the measure does not require proof of citizenship and must pass a second vote before taking effect.

Currently, Nevada is one of 14 states that do not require voters to show identification at the polls.
