Coroner IDs Man Fatally Shot by Reno Police

The Washoe County Coroner’s Office has identified the man fatally shot by police during an officer-involved shooting on the Wells Avenue Bridge last week.

According to the Medical Examiner’s Office, 27-year-old Michael J. Johnson died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred just before 4 p.m. on Feb. 3 near Wells Avenue and Kuenzli Street.

Reno Police Department officers were dispatched to the bridge for a reported welfare check and said they interacted with Johnson for several minutes before the shooting occurred. Authorities have not released details about what led up to the use of force.

One officer received injuries during the incident. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene and was believed to be homeless, according to authorities.
