The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says a student-led protest against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Fernley on Friday remained peaceful, despite earlier concerns about possible threats tied to the demonstration.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were contacted numerous times beginning Wednesday night by members of the community reporting potential threats related to the planned protest. Those reports included concerns about possible fights, shootings, and other violent behavior.
The Sheriff’s Office investigated the reported threats and determined they were largely unsubstantiated. However, as a precaution, additional law enforcement presence was scheduled throughout Fernley, particularly in areas connected to the planned protest.
On Friday, just before 10 a.m., approximately 50 students walked out of Fernley High School, while about 20 students walked out of Silverland Middle School, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said students carried signs and flags.
After leaving their respective campuses, students gathered at a roundabout near Main Street in Fernley. A group of counter-protesters, also students, were in the area.
Law enforcement personnel and community members reported slowed traffic near the roundabout during the protest, but no other incidents occurred.
Deputies remained in the area throughout the afternoon as protesters had dispersed by approximately 3 p.m., according to the Sheriff’s Office.
