A man who strangled his roommate to death has been sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 22 years.
Alex Hanson also received an additional sentence of two to five years for a deadly weapons enhancement, according to court records.
The killing occurred on Sept. 18, 2025, when Hanson called 911 to report that his roommate, 62-year-old Jeffrey Falkenstein, was dead inside their home. During the call, Hanson told the dispatcher that he and Falkenstein had “got into it” the night before and that Falkenstein had died. Hanson said he knew what had happened and acknowledged that the two had argued over Falkenstein’s dating life.
Investigators later learned that Hanson and Falkenstein had been roommates for approximately six months and had a contentious relationship. Hanson told authorities the two frequently bickered and fought during that time.
Court documents also revealed that the morning after the killing, Hanson called his mother and told her, “I think I might’ve killed somebody,” adding that “I freaked out.” Hanson’s mother urged him to contact the police, which he did shortly afterward.
Hanson was later arrested and charged with Falkenstein’s death. The life sentence handed down by the court ensures Hanson will spend decades in prison, though he will be eligible to seek parole after serving at least 22 years.
