School District to Close School for Year

The Humboldt County, Nev., School District has voted to close Winnemucca Grammar School for the remainder of the school year due to concerns about the building’s structural integrity.

Students from Winnemucca Grammar School will attend classes at Grass Valley Elementary School, while pre-kindergarten students attend Sonoma Heights Elementary School.

The decision follows a seismic evaluation report completed in December that identified multiple structural issues at the school. The report cited unreinforced masonry, a lack of secondary structural supports, minor cracking throughout the building, and evidence of water damage.

Grass Valley Elementary and Winnemucca Grammar School will continue to operate as separate schools, each maintaining its own students, staff, and instructional programs, despite sharing the same campus.

The closure will remain in effect through the end of the current school year as the district evaluates next steps for the facility.
