Virginia’s Proposed Assault Weapon Ban

Commentary

Virginia is edging closer to a radical redefinition of gun ownership, one that would effectively criminalize millions of law-abiding residents. A bill recently voted out of committee in the Virginia Senate seeks to ban so-called “assault weapons,” a term the state defines so broadly that it covers virtually any semi-automatic center-fire rifle or pistol.

Introduced by Bangladeshi-born State Senator Saddam Azlan Salim, the legislation, if enacted, would make firearm ownership a Class 1 misdemeanor. For millions of Virginians who have never broken the law, this could transform them overnight into criminals simply for exercising a constitutionally protected right.

Proponents of the bill claim it will enhance public safety, yet it does nothing to address the root causes of violent crime. Instead, it punishes responsible gun owners while leaving hardened criminals untouched. The broad, sweeping definitions in the legislation mean ordinary sporting rifles, pistols used for home defense, and even some collectible firearms could fall under the ban.

It isn’t measured reform. It’s a full-frontal assault on individual liberty.

Virginians deserve leaders who respect the Second Amendment and the principle that citizens, not the government, should be trusted to protect themselves. Any law that criminalizes law-abiding behavior in the name of safety is not safety, it’s tyranny by legislation.
