Democrats Launch Major Voter Registration Push

Republicans have outnumbered Democrats in Nevada voter registration for more than a year, marking a political shift not seen in nearly two decades and prompting a response from national Democratic leaders.

The change, which began in early 2025, erased a long-standing Democratic registration advantage in the state. In response, the Democratic National Committee has launched its largest-ever partisan voter registration effort and its first major on-the-ground initiative of this kind in more than 10 years.

The program includes a seven-figure national investment, with at least $2 million allocated to Nevada. Funding will train organizers and build grassroots infrastructure for the 2026 midterm elections and future cycles. Party officials say the effort represents a strategic shift away from reliance on nonpartisan groups toward direct, party-led voter registration.

The initiative will target young voters, voters of color, and individuals without a college education. In Nevada, a key emphasis will be outreach to Latino communities, with organizers aiming to register nearly half of the state’s estimated 160,000 unregistered Latino voters.

Despite the partisan battle, nonpartisan voters remain the largest bloc among Nevada’s more than 2.1 million active registered voters. Over the past four years, registrations unaffiliated with either major party have surged, due to the state’s automatic voter registration system, which defaults new voters to nonpartisan status unless they opt into a party.
