Passenger Dies Days After Crash

Reno, Nev. — The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash involving a semi-truck that occurred late last month on Interstate 80 in Washoe County.

According to authorities, troopers with the Nevada Highway Patrol, a division of the Nevada State Police, responded to the crash on eastbound I-80 east of University Way at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Dec. 30, 2025.

A preliminary investigation determined that a Ford Mustang was traveling eastbound on the Interstate 80 on-ramp from University Way in the left travel lane when the driver lost control. The vehicle began to spin to the left and crossed a raised curb separating the on-ramp from the main eastbound travel lanes of I-80, entering active traffic.

At the same time, a semi-truck and trailer were traveling eastbound on I-80 in the second lane from the left. Investigators say the front of the Mustang struck the right side of the semi-truck’s trailer.

Following the initial impact, the Mustang went to the right, crossing the No. 3, 4, and 5 travel lanes before colliding with a guard rail, according to the highway patrol.

The front right passenger of the Mustang, identified as Carolyn Newton, a 79-year-old woman from Sparks, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Authorities said Newton later died from her injuries on Jan. 3.
