Las Vegas, Nev. — Newly released court documents provide additional details about a violent confrontation between a man armed with a machete and a deputy constable during an eviction service in the southeast Las Vegas Valley.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the incident occurred just after 9 a.m. on Dec. 6 near Sandhill and Sunset roads at the Mandalay Bay Apartment Complex, as Las Vegas Township deputy constable, Sgt. Deputy Constable Mark Ruesch was attempting to serve an eviction notice and requested assistance from a maintenance worker.
Court documents state the pair was unable to enter the unit through the front door. The maintenance employee retrieved a ladder to access the apartment through the balcony. Investigators say the suspect, Victor Vondrasek, then attacked the man with a machete, causing a severe laceration to his neck.
Hearing the worker’s calls for help, Ruesch climbed the ladder to intervene. Documents allege Vondrasek attempted to stab the constable, but the machete became caught in Ruesch’s uniform. At that point, the constable fired his weapon, striking Vondrasek in the face.
The report states Ruesch then attempted to aid the injured maintenance employee as Vondrasek continued to attack, kicking the constable and striking him in the face with a bag of landscaping rocks. Responding Metro officers heard yelling inside the unit and attempted to force their way in. Ruesch was able to clear the barricade from the front door, allowing officers to enter.
First responders took Vondrasek and the maintenance employee to Sunrise Hospital for treatment. Police said Ruesch suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Employed as an independent contractor with the Las Vegas Township since 2017, he will not be assigned new work while the investigation continues.
Vondrasek was unable to appear in court on Wednesday due to medical reasons. He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder with use of a deadly weapon on a first responder, battery on an older person, and resisting arrest.
