STOREY COUNTY, Nev. — Tesla has been overtaken by Chinese automaker BYD as the world’s best-selling electric vehicle maker, following a second consecutive year of declining sales.
Tesla delivered 1.64 million vehicles in 2025, down 9 percent from 2024, while BYD sold 2.26 million vehicles. In the fourth quarter, Tesla delivered 418,227 units, missing analysts’ expectations of 440,000, a shortfall partially attributed to the expiration of a $7,500 federal EV tax credit in September.
Despite the sales slump and controversies surrounding CEO Elon Musk, Tesla shares ended 2025 up roughly 11 percent. Investors remain optimistic about Musk’s plans for robotaxi services and humanoid robots for home and office use.
Ahead of trading today, Tesla stock rose nearly 2 percent.
