A Fish Tale

Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19 (NKJV)

For years the Progressive movement in the U.S. has been doing it’s best to undercut tradition. Nothing brings this point home than the symbol of the fish.

The ichthus was used by the early church as a secret Christian symbol and is now generally known as the “sign of the fish.” Ancient Christians, during their persecution by the Roman Empire in the first few centuries after Christ, used the fish symbol to mark meeting places and tombs, or to distinguish friend from foe.

“According to one ancient story, when a Christian met a stranger in the road, the Christian sometimes drew one arc of the simple fish outline in the dirt,” writes Elesha Coffman in ‘Christianity Today.’ “If the stranger drew the other arc, both believers knew they were in good company.”

On the other hand, the Darwin fish is an ichthus symbol with “evolved” legs and feet attached. Designed in 1983, the Darwin fish was first used on a leaflet by ‘Atheists United’ in 1984.
