The Long Way to a Stop

At 2:33 a.m., when the roads are mostly empty and decisions travel faster, Las Vegas police tried to pull over a stolen car that wasn’t supposed to be there in the first place.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the driver did not stop. The attempt turned into a pursuit, the kind that stretches across dark lanes and quiet interchanges where there are few witnesses and even fewer good options.

Somewhere along the 215 west ramp to Interstate 15, the chase caught up with itself. The stolen car struck another vehicle, turning a pursuit into a crash.

The driver kept moving, on foot this time, but not for long. Officers caught up, taking the suspect into custody a short time later.

The driver of the other vehicle went to a hospital with minor injuries, an outcome that feels smaller than the moment that caused it. And by the light of morning, the ramp from westbound 215 to southbound I-15 was closed, and traffic was reanimated to Russell Road while investigators worked the scene.

Cones and patrol cars stood in for answers, marking the place where a straight line turned into a detour. Everything in between is what filled the night.
