The call came at 3 a.m., the hour when voices sound different and explanations come out unfinished.
A man told a 911 operator his wife was hurt and needed medical help. The address led responders to a home on Esmeralda Avenue, near Sahara and Arville, an ordinary block at an hour when most of it was asleep.
Paramedics arrived first. Inside, they found a woman on the ground, dead.
Something about the scene did not fit the call. The medics asked for the police.
Officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department met the caller outside, who identified himself as the woman’s husband. The man told them there had been an argument the night before, and that “something bad had happened.”
Those words tend to lengthen an investigation rather than explain it.
Police took the husband into custody and called homicide detectives.
Early findings point to an argument that turned physical after the wife said she wanted to leave and take the children with her. Authorities have not released the cause of death or detailed what raised suspicion for medical personnel.
A youngster got placed in protective custody, and by sunrise, the house was quiet once more.
