On a matter as quiet as a ballot and as loud as a classroom, Nevada’s largest teachers union has made its choice.
The Nevada State Education Association, which represents public school teachers across the state, is endorsing Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar for re-election. The office he holds does not set curriculum or run schools, but it does oversee something educators say comes just before all of that: the act of voting itself.
In its statement, the union framed the endorsement as a matter of foundation.
“Voting is the foundation of our democracy, and right now, that foundation is under real pressure,” the NSEA said, adding that Nevada needs leaders committed not only to protecting elections but expanding access so eligible voters can participate.
For teachers, the argument begins earlier than Election Day. Civic participation, they note, is something students learn long before they are old enough to cast a ballot.
“Re-electing Secretary Aguilar means continuing that work with integrity, transparency, and a deep belief in the power of the vote,” the statement reads.
Remember, though, endorsements, like lessons, are meant to signal what matters.
