At an hour when judgment is usually off duty, a gray Ram 2500 came turning from Las Vegas Boulevard onto West Sahara and promptly forgot its manners. The truck declined to stay in its lane, an expectation so modest it scarcely deserves the name, and instead found the sidewalk, where pedestrians are known to stand about under the impression of safety.
Roughly 200 feet along, the vehicle made a firm introduction to a bus shelter and the woman occupying it, a 38-year-old who had committed the ordinary offense of waiting for a ride. She was carried from her post and laid in the roadway with a violence that did not improve her prospects.
The truck, having made its statement, departed the scene without leaving a forwarding address, but was persuaded to reconsider later. Police found the vehicle and its driver, one Dario Nunez, Jr., who showed signs that his faculties had taken an earlier leave of absence, in the form of DUI and hit-and-run.
Paramedics took the woman to UMC with injuries described as potentially life-threatening. Mr. Nunez appeared in court on Sunday, where the law inquired, more patiently than the sidewalk, what possessed him.
