Nevada Election Systems Ranked No. 2 in Nation

Nevada is now one of the top states in the country for election administration, ranking second nationwide in the 2024 Elections Performance Index released by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The ranking marks a significant jump for Nevada, which climbed 11 spots from 13th place in the 2020 cycle. Only Minnesota ranked higher in the latest report.

The index evaluates states on election policies, administration practices, and measurable performance outcomes across federal election cycles.

Nevada’s strong showing was driven in part by its use of risk-limiting audits, a method that checks election outcomes in sampled precincts and can expand into full manual recounts if needed. The report noted Nevada is one of only six states using the system.

The state also received high marks for voter accessibility for voters with disabilities, and for maintaining a low residual vote rate, an indicator of ballot accuracy and voting machine performance.

Wait times at polling places were another strong point. Nevada voters waited an average of 8.4 minutes, compared to the national average of 10.4 minutes. Indiana recorded the longest average wait time at 21.2 minutes.

Nevada also scored 100% in data completeness, meaning it fully complied with federal reporting standards to the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, above the national average of 95%.

In addition, less than 18% of Nevada’s military and overseas ballots went unreturned, outperforming the national average by nearly six percentage points.
