A Las Vegas mother is grieving after her 37-year-old son was killed Saturday morning when a suspect stole her vehicle with him inside and later crashed it.
Deborah Requena had left her son, Benito Saragoza, in her car while she shopped at a Walmart on Charleston, as he had difficulty walking for extended periods. According to Requena, she told her son to stay in the car while she went into the store, unaware that her vehicle would be stolen within nine minutes.
Police say that 55-year-old Harold Allen entered the driver’s side of the vehicle while Saragoza slept in the passenger seat. Allen then allegedly sped off and crashed into a large rock and pole.
When Requena exited the store and discovered her car missing, she immediately alerted authorities. Police informed her that her son died from his injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
Requena believes her son was trying to escape the vehicle during the ordeal, noting that witnesses saw him with his hands outstretched.
Allen sustained minor injuries in the crash and now faces murder and kidnapping charges. According to court records, Allen had a hearing scheduled for Sunday, but did not appear due to medical reasons. He is to appear in court again on Tuesday.
