Rep. Susie Lee deleted a profane social media post about President Donald Trump early Wednesday after it drew criticism online, highlighting the political tensions surrounding a pending Supreme Court case on birthright citizenship.
It was around 1 a.m. Eastern Time when she posted the comment in response to reports that Trump planned to attend oral arguments at the U.S. Supreme Court in a high-profile case addressing the scope of birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment. By Wednesday morning, Lee appeared to address the controversy in a follow-up message, defending her reaction while acknowledging the response it generated.
The National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) criticized the Congresswoman’s remarks, pointing to the competitive nature of her district. In a series of posts, NRCC War Room Director Ben Petersen noted that Trump narrowly carried Lee’s district in the 2024 election, while Lee won reelection by a similarly tight margin.
Lee represents a battleground district rated “Lean Democrat” by the Cook Political Report, making it a key target for both parties ahead of the November general election.
Trump’s planned appearance at the Supreme Court is itself historic, marking the first time a sitting president has attended oral arguments. The case centers on an executive order seeking to limit birthright citizenship for children born to parents who are in the United States unlawfully or on temporary legal status.
A ruling in favor of the administration could significantly reshape longstanding interpretations of the 14th Amendment.
Trump commented on the issue Tuesday in a post on Truth Social, stating that birthright citizenship has been misapplied beyond its original intent.
