With election season ramping up in northern Nevada, transportation and county officials are reminding candidates and voters that political campaign signs are not allowed in many public areas, especially along state highways.
As campaign activity increases, more signs are appearing across the region, but the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) says many are illegal. The restriction applies to medians, shoulders, sidewalks, and on-and off-ramps along state highways.
Campaign signs generally must be placed on private property. There are additional regulations governing size and display in unincorporated Washoe County.
Signs in unincorporated areas must not exceed 128 square feet and cannot include lighting, smoke, or special effects. There are also deadlines for removing campaign signage after the election, which is 10 days following the close og a campaign.
NDOT crews will remove illegally placed signage.
