A national wild horse rescue organization says 15 horses removed from Nevada public lands during Bureau of Land Management gathers among animals scheduled for slaughter in Mexico.
Skydog Sanctuary said they found the horses at a Texas “kill pen,” where animals are typically sold and shipped for slaughter. The organization warned that unless federal authorities intervene or rescue groups can secure the animals’ release, the horses would go to Mexico.
The Oregon-based rescue group has called on federal officials to seize the horses and has filed a formal report with the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program.
According to documents reviewed by the organization, the BLM gathered the Mustangs from ranges in Nevada. Skydog said the horses, 12 mares and three geldings, were initially held at the BLM’s Palomino Valley holding facility north of Reno before being transported to an adoption event in Livingston, Texas.
The adoption event took place Feb. 27–28. Skydog stated that the same animals appeared at the Last Chance Kill Pen in Kaufman, Texas, on the same day.
