Feds Extends Nevada SNAP Work Requirement Waiver

Nevada will continue to waive work requirements for certain Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients through April 30 due to ongoing litigation, according to the Nevada Division of Social Services (DSS).

Nevada learned on Thursday that officials had extended the ABAWD work requirement exemption. The decision enables thousands of residents to remain eligible for SNAP benefits beyond the March 1 cutoff date.

Under federal rules, ABAWD participants have to complete at least 20 hours per week of qualifying work activities. Those who do not meet the requirement are limited to three months of SNAP benefits within 36 months, unless they later satisfy the work criteria and qualify for additional months.

In response to the extension, DSS issued approximately $7.3 million in SNAP benefits to more than 25,000 individuals who lost eligibility on March 1 for not meeting the ABAWD work requirements. Distribution of benefits for remaining recipients subject to the work requirement will be staggered through March 10, officials said.

DSS also reminded recipients who have received renewal packets by mail to complete and return them for evaluation. SNAP applicants and renewing participants meet with case managers, who review time limits and work requirements during interviews.

The temporary extension ensures continued access to food assistance for eligible Nevadans while the legal proceedings remain unresolved.
