Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine is demanding $2.1 billion from the Trump administration, arguing that federal tariffs have imposed costs on Nevada households.
Conine, a Democrat, said the administration’s tariff policies have cost American consumers an estimated $231.35 billion since February of last year. Citing Nevada’s approximately 1.2 million households, Conine contends the federal government owes $2.1 billion to offset what he describes as the financial burden placed on residents.
The demand comes after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday in a 6-3 decision that most of the tariffs in question were unconstitutional. The ruling appeared to mark a setback for the administration’s trade policies; however, another law replaced the first used to justify the tariffs, and President Trump increased all tariffs by 10%.
The move has drawn criticism from some political observers. One commentator accused the treasurer of creating what he described as a “forged bill,” arguing it was hypocritical for a state official to issue such a demand while other Nevada officials continue prosecuting six Republicans in the state’s 2020 “fake electors” case.
No response from the Trump administration was immediately available.
