The Bureau of Land Management will begin an emergency gather of horses north of Ely on or around February 22, citing severe drought conditions and limited forage in the area.
According to the agency, the operation will primarily target horses located outside designated herd management areas in White Pine County. Approximately 300 horses will be gathered using drive-trapping methods.
The BLM stated the gather is necessary due to ongoing drought and shrinking food resources, which pose risks to the animals’ health.
Captured horses will be transported to the Palomino Valley Wild Horse and Burro Center in Sparks on March 1.
