Castle Peak Area Closed; Recovery Effort Ongoing

A large section of backcountry near Castle Peak has been closed to the public as recovery crews continue working in the aftermath of a deadly avalanche that killed multiple skiers earlier this week.

Tahoe National Forest officials announced the closure of all National Forest lands and trails in the Castle Peak area near Truckee following the avalanche on Feb. 17. The closure, which takes effect Feb. 20, will remain in place through Mar. 15, unless lifted earlier.

According to forest officials, the shutdown is necessary to protect public safety and allow emergency crews to conduct recovery operations without interference. The restricted area includes National Forest lands between Castle Peak and the South Fork of Prosser Creek.

Entry into the area and use of any trails within the closure zone are prohibited.

Emergency personnel are utilizing snow machines, aircraft, heavy equipment, and explosives to reduce environmental hazards and ensure the safety of first responders working in unstable snow conditions.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that eight skiers died in Tuesday’s avalanche, and one person remains missing. Authorities said recovery operations had to be halted Thursday due to severe winter weather and will continue as conditions allow.

Officials have not released the identities of the victims.
