A runaway juvenile who took her parents’ vehicle Sunday morning was safely located in Carlin just hours later, following a coordinated response by multiple law enforcement agencies across northern Nevada.
According to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to Our Place at approximately 10 a.m. on February 15 after receiving a report that a juvenile had run away and taken her parents’ vehicle.
Shortly after the vehicle went missing, the teen used her parents’ credit cards at a gas station on USA Parkway. The transaction led the family to believe the juvenile may have been traveling eastbound, possibly attempting to return to Chicago, Illinois, where she previously lived.
Dispatchers sent out an Attempt to Locate (ATL) alert to all agencies throughout northern Nevada. Washoe County dispatchers also initiated a Rapid SOS request to help pinpoint a person’s location. The SOS notification helped track the vehicle to the Carlin area, outside of Elko.
The Nevada Highway Patrol located the vehicle along the Interstate 80 corridor and attempted a traffic stop. Troopers reported that the juvenile initially failed to yield but eventually pulled over without further incident.
Troopers took her into custody in Carlin, where they are holding her on local charges.
Carlin is roughly 280 miles east of Reno.
