A Zebra Takes a Sunday Stroll Through Reno

Commentary

Last Sunday, the quiet streets of south Reno were briefly graced by a most unusual pedestrian: a zebra named Ziggy, who apparently decided that the world outside his enclosure deserved a quick inspection.

According to Washoe County Regional Animal Services, the striped wanderer was spotted (no pun intended) near Huffaker Lane. Animal control received a flurry of calls, but, much like a gambler chasing a lucky ace down a river, the officers couldn’t quite lay hands on him.

By the time the humans had assembled with their clipboards and badges, Ziggy’s owner had already lassoed the situation and returned the beast to its proper quarters.

The first call, made around 2:30 p.m., came from a concerned citizen who had seen a post on Nextdoor but hadn’t actually glimpsed the animal. That one went nowhere.

A second phone call, an hour later, finally confirmed Ziggy’s existence and residence. But even then, the officers’ arrival at 5 p.m. found nothing but a few puzzled neighbors and the faint scent of adventure.

When questioned the next day, Ziggy’s owner reported that the escapade lasted a mere 10 to 15 minutes, a brief but spirited taste of freedom. Officials reminded the public that, in Washoe County, zebras fall under the same legal umbrella as horses, so no special permits, no secret handshakes, no ceremonial dances, just stripes, hooves, and a fondness for wandering.

For now, Ziggy has returned to the quiet life of a domesticated zebra, leaving behind stories, a few raised eyebrows, and perhaps a renewed appreciation for the ordinary horse in the pasture next door.

Oh, what politicians could learn from such a striped wonder.
