Equine Infectious Anemia Confirmed; Quarantine Issued
Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) officials have confirmed a case of equine infectious anemia (EIA) in a horse in Nye County, prompting a quarantine of the affected facility and all exposed horses.
EIA, sometimes called “swamp fever,” is a viral disease that affects horses, mules, and donkeys. It spreads through blood contact and cannot be transmitted through coughs, sneezes, or casual contact.
Infected animals may display fever, weakness, swelling, irregular heartbeat, and decreased red blood cell counts. Officials say the disease does not affect humans and poses no public health risk.
Nevada law also prohibits disclosure of the exact location of confirmed cases to prevent unnecessary alarm.
