A gray wolf recently monitored in the Truckee area has crossed the state line into Nevada, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW). The wolf crossed into Nevada sometime before 8:00 a.m. Monday, and it continues to move through the area.
The collared wolf, a member of the Harvey Pack known for causing disturbances in Sierra County, was last tracked near Donner Lake over the weekend. NDOW officials reported Monday that the wolf had moved into the High Sierra, between Mount Houghton and Mount Rose, in the northern Carson Range.
“This is not unusual,” NDOW said in a statement. “There is a history of wolves briefly entering Nevada and then leaving. In 2016, a young male from the Shasta Pack crossed the state line. Two collared wolves from Oregon were reported in Humboldt County between 2020 and 2021, and a trail camera captured a wolf in Washoe County in 2023.”
Officials stressed there is currently no cause for concern, but confirmed they are monitoring the situation closely. NDOW urges residents to stay aware of their surroundings but to avoid approaching the animal.
The department will continue tracking the wolf’s movements and provide updates if the situation changes.
