An 11-year-old boy was flown to a regional burn center Friday morning after suffering burns while playing with black powder in his backyard, according to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and crews from the Central Lyon County Fire Protection District were dispatched around 10:30 a.m. to the area of Flowery Avenue and Rosepeak Road following reports of a child suffering burns. When emergency responders arrived, they found the boy with moderate injuries to his face and eyes.
Investigators determined the injuries occurred when the black powder the child was handling exploded. Authorities stated the boy found the powder in a small tin while playing in the backyard.
First responders treated the child at the scene before getting him airlifted to the UC Davis Burn Center for further care of his injuries.
