The Washoe County School District (WCSD) is responding to reports of planned student walkouts protesting recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations and fatal shootings in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The demonstrations stem from incidents involving federal agents, including the high-profile fatal shooting of Alex Pretti during an immigration enforcement encounter, which has sparked nationwide outrage and calls for accountability.
The school district says while it supports student expression, it does not support interrupting the education process.
“As a district, WCSD has always placed a high value on student voice and encouraged our students to express their thoughts, feelings, and opinions about local, national, and international issues,” the district said.
However, WCSD made clear that its primary mission is to educate students without disruption.
“While WCSD understands and respects the purpose of these events, its first priority is educating our students without disruption to instruction. In order for WCSD to carry out this mission, students must attend school. Students participating in any walkout will be marked tardy or absent based on time missed, with such absences unexcused per Nevada law.”
The district stated that participants must avoid disrupting classes, other students, or engaging in unsafe behaviors that could compromise school security. Reports indicate similar walkouts may occur in other regional districts, with flyers circulating for actions as early as Friday at several schools.
