State Joins Federal Program to Expand School Choice

Governor Joe Lombardo announced Nevada will participate in a new federal tax credit program linked to President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” aimed at expanding educational options for families.

Starting in 2027, taxpayers can receive up to $1,700 in federal tax credits for donations to approved Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGO), which provide K-12 scholarships for tutoring, special education, and other qualifying expenses. Scholarships go to households earning up to 300 percent of the area median income.

Nevada will oversee the application process for SGOs and submit an annual list to the Treasury Department. The program could broaden school choice according to advocates, while critics warn it may divert funds from public schools.
