Inmate Dies After Medical Emergency

An inmate died Saturday afternoon after suffering a medical emergency at the Carson City Jail.

Carson City Fire/Paramedics responded to the jail at approximately 1:19 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, after receiving a report of an unresponsive inmate who was not breathing. Despite resuscitation efforts, the inmate was pronounced deceased at the scene at approximately 1:50 p.m.

Detention staff were alerted by another inmate that an individual in the shower area appeared to be experiencing medical difficulties. Staff responded and initially found the inmate conscious but struggling. Deputies assisted the inmate in getting dressed and transported him by wheelchair to the detention observation area.

As deputies arrived at the observation area, the inmate collapsed in the wheelchair and became unresponsive. Deputies and paramedics immediately initiated lifesaving measures, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

Records indicate the inmate had a history of medical challenges.

The deceased had been in continuous custody of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office since Nov. 19, 2025, following a warrant issued for failure to appear. The inmate was first taken into custody for an indecent exposure charge stemming from an incident on Nov. 23, 2022, with an additional contempt of court warrant recorded on Feb. 17, 2023.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Nevada Investigations Division are handling the death investigation.
