Man Indicted on Open Murder

Sparks, Nev. — A Sparks man accused of killing his girlfriend is now facing an open murder charge following a Washoe County Grand Jury indictment handed down this week.

Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks announced that Luis Ibarra, 44, was indicted on open murder in connection with the death of Yadira Cano, the mother of his two young children. The indictment marks the next step in a case that has drawn attention since the fall of 2023.

Sparks Police were called to a home on Boise Drive on the afternoon of Oct. 23, 2023, after Cano’s sister requested a welfare check. Investigators said Cano had missed a scheduled meeting and was not responding to phone calls, prompting concern from family members.

When officers arrived, they found the body of 40-year-old Yadira Cano inside the residence. Police said she had suffered multiple stab wounds.

Ibarra was taken into custody shortly after the discovery and was initially held without bail while detectives continued their investigation. Prosecutors later presented evidence to the grand jury, which resulted in the indictment.

An open murder charge allows prosecutors to pursue either first- or second-degree murder as the case proceeds through the courts.
