CARSON CITY, Nev. (Dec. 26, 2025) — Initial filings for unemployment benefits in Nevada increased last week, even as jobless claims declined nationwide, according to data released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Labor.
New unemployment claims in Nevada rose to 3,259 for the week ending Dec. 19, up from 2,872 claims the previous week. Initial claims are an indicator of layoffs and labor market trends.
Nationally, unemployment claims moved in the opposite direction. Across the U.S., initial jobless claims fell to 214,000 last week, a decrease of 10,000 from the prior week’s total of 224,000, based on seasonally adjusted figures.
Among the states, Nebraska reported the highest percentage increase in weekly claims, with filings jumping 63.3 percent. West Virginia recorded the best percentage decline, dropping by 39.7 percent.
