VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. (Dec. 24, 2025) — Home and Gardening Television (HGTV) has released its list of the “50 Favorite Small Towns to Visit for Christmas” ahead of the 2025 holiday season, naming Virginia City as Nevada’s standout destination.
HGTV selected one town from each state, ranking Virginia City at No. 28 overall. The historic mining town is renowned for its Old West charm and a busy schedule of holiday events that attract visitors throughout December.
“Virginia City is a 19th-century mining town that still maintains its historic Old West facade along the main street,” HGTV wrote in its ranking.
An attraction cited was Christmas on the Comstock, an annual event that spans two weeks and includes fireworks, a tree-lighting ceremony, craft fairs, carolers, a parade of lights, and visits with Santa Claus. HGTV also pointed to rides on the Candy Cane Express aboard the Virginia and Truckee Railroad as a signature holiday experience.
Additional festivities include Christmas-themed performances at the historic Piper’s Opera House, further adding to the town’s nostalgic holiday atmosphere.
Virginia City’s recognition places it among other festive small towns nationwide that HGTV says offer memorable Christmas experiences through local traditions, history, and family-friendly events.
