WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. (Dec. 17, 2025) — New data from the Nevada Department of Public Safety shows traffic fatalities are down statewide compared to last year. However, Washoe County is moving in the opposite direction, with an increase in deadly crashes.
According to the report, traffic fatalities across Nevada are down approximately 10 percent year to date. In Washoe County, however, fatal crashes have risen by more than 25 percent compared to the same period last year.
The report compares year-to-date figures with those from 2024 and shows that as of November 2025, 58 people have died on Washoe County roadways.
Authorities say impairment and excessive speed continue to be major contributing factors in fatal crashes. Officials are also raising concerns about the number of fatalities involving motorcyclists and pedestrians.
Distractions, particularly cellphone use, are another factor contributing to serious and fatal crashes involving both drivers and pedestrians. Mercurio urged motorists and pedestrians alike to stay focused, saying phone calls and messages can wait.
The data also highlights an increase in fatalities involving unrestrained drivers and passengers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, not wearing a seatbelt increases the risk of dying in a crash by nearly 50 percent.
